POP-UP PANDA [Dec 3-4]:: FEATURED BRANDS :: HOUSE OF NASSAT & GOLD COAST TRADING

I've been working behind the scenes to mastermind a pop-up shop featuring some of my closest artist fam and favorite brands. I've got my girl, Waichi who is bringing her awesome taste and expertise as a creative director/event producer and designer/ stylist Chay on the team, so when you add their selections to the mix, you probably got one of the finest independent art & fashion  shopping experiences that New York can offer...so don't waste your money at Walmart and Marshalls on  imagination-deficient mass-produced gifts when you can get one-of-a-kind art & clothes & accessories while you're also supporting living artists. I'll have a some affordable prints to sell as well. We donate a portion of our profit to Falling Whistles, a non-profit dedicated to bringing peace in the Congo.
The shop will be open for two days, this coming Friday and Saturday (Dec 3rd-4th), and on Friday, we'll going to wrap up the night with a birthday funhouse party for Panda's co-founder, my homie DJ/MC Stimulus. Music will be provided by good friends, WAAJEED & DJ Parler...

FEATURED BRAND :: HOUSE OF NASSAT
Nacinimod Deodee's line House of Nassat takes a futuristic twist on traditional tecniques & design of clothes-making. Imagine indigenous patterns on crocheted jackets that makes one look like one just stepped out of a STAR TREK episode taking place in ancient Mesoamerica. Nacinimod is a true visionary, and just like traditional craftsmen who weave their ancestors's legends into their fabric, his geometric designs spell out the symbolic patterns of his cosmos...there is more than what meets the eye.

We will have some of his one-of-a kind exclusive pieces on sale this weekend at the POP-UP PANDA.

ABOUT: The House of Nassat is a lifestyle line offering hand-made one of a kind pieces as well as everyday apparel. As CEO and head designer I have had the opportunity to create custom couture pieces for fashion forward artists such as Erykah Badu, Common, Musiq, dead prez, N'Dambi, Junior Kelly and Talib Kweli. We at the House of Nassat are fully committed to our mantra, "actively participating in the pursuit of perfection". Keep your eyes peeled for the real. Nacinimod signing out. Be Brave, Be Fearless...

FEATURED BRAND :: GOLD COAST TRADING
Both Sarah & I love GCT. Its founder, art director/designer Emeka Alams was also responsible for establishing & creating the look for another dope brand 21MC, which became a huge success back in the days of myspace (check this interview with him to find out more about that connection)...how can one forget the amazing visual branding & art direction that gave 21 MC an instant cult status (I was one of the very first to support them in '07 on my blog). Emeka is a true adept of creating a look that communicates concepts, a feel and a lifestyle on many levels...brilliant stuff.
Check out their site to see more of the collection. Pretty excited to have them on board!

VONY x REA present :: 'Kids Dream In Color' Spring Workshop x Lichiban

The organization I've been involved with as a teaching artist/ art mentor Voices of New York (VONY) recently teamed up with a New York-based architectural design firm Real Estate Arts (REA) to hold a week long art workshop called Kids Dream In Color (KDIC). Ten very talented and gifted kids were chosen to participate in a one of a kind art immersion where they had to recreate the Empire State Building using common, eco-friendly art materials. The challenge was to re-envision the building in the year 2400 as a green, earth-friendly building, a futuristic symbol of a new Empire State of Mind.
Romeo and Miles sharing a laugh on the way to the field trip to the Empire State Building
The kids drew their inspiration from this iconic building. The amazing art deco interior design of the Empire State (1st row). KDIC kids Saya, Ciara and Jalen enjoying the trip to the Empire State (2nd row). Aric (videographer) and Sue (VONY founder) documents every kid's artworks while Lori (right) from REA (3rd row) oversees Nathaniel's work. REA staff took some time off to mentor each kid individually(4th row).
We used a 10 minutes visualization exercise using my work, DORJE as a visual guide to time & space travel to the galaxy where DORJE would serve as an imaginary guide to introduce the kids to alternative ways of imagining a green future.
(from left to right) Quest, Ciara, Saya, and Miles together with the other KDIC participants took a break from the workshop and walked around the block & checked out a local gallery.
Kecia finishes her version of the building (top left). REA staff focuses on mentoring the kids to finish up their projects (top right and lower left). The VONY team took a break and went outside with the kids to get some fresh air (lower right).

The passion of these kids for the arts illuminated every "building" they've created. The workshop ended with a very successful exhibition of the kids' artworks. Everyone at attendance in the exhibit- the mentors, parents, and especially the kids-, couldn't be more proud of all the beautiful artworks created through all their hard work.

*Voices Of New York has more incoming art workshops and projects, e-mail voicesofnewyork(at)gmail.com for more details.

ILLUSTRATION FOR PETER HADAR'S new single FULL TIME LOVER

The newest of my AURAL VISION cover art series.

<a href="http://peterhadar.bandcamp.com/track/full-time-lover">Full Time Lover by Peter Hadar</a>

My cover illustration for PETER HADAR's sexy new single FULL TIME LOVER just dropped! I'm already a fan of Peter, so I was happy when he reached out to me with his concept for the cover, which involved a clock and a nude forming the clock's arms. This was my second try at it.

WHERE'S BROOKLYN AT? COUP D'ETAT ARTS Collective group show opening this Saturday, November 21, 2009

I'm showing some work along with 20 + Brooklyn artists--Come through this Saturday! Check out the preview of some of the other exhibitors' work on my personal blog.

(BROOKLYN, NY) November 12, 2009 – Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation’s Center for Arts and Culture, PUMA, and The Coup d’etat Arts Collective are honored to announce the opening of “Live to Change Something Through Art,” a mixed media exhibition of works created by 23 local artists. Please join the artists for the opening reception on Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 4 p.m.– 7 p.m. at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation’s Skylight Gallery, 1368 Fulton Street, 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, New York.

“Live to Change Something Through Art” features work that is reflective of the current Brooklyn arts movement and underscores Coup d’etat’s thought-provoking brand principle, “Live to Change Something.” Highlighting a multicultural collective of artists across several disciplines, the exhibition encompasses painting, photography, sculpture, video and installation.

“The voices of Urban image makers have too often been dismissed as inarticulate and underexposed,” says Rasu Jilani, co-founder of Coup d’etat Brooklyn, and “Live to Change Something Through Art” Creative Director. “This exhibition was developed to help my fellow creators build positive awareness of their work while exposing our youth to the many vehicles of self-expression.”

Artists that were hand-selected to participate in “Live to Change Something Through Art” include: Molaundo Jones, Suhail Smith, Sam Wilson, Lichiban, Rob Fokused, Alice Mizrachi, Stephanie Land, Deka, SeeOne, One9, Alzo Slade, Ana Bravo, Berman Fenelus, Jen One, Reuben King, Amanda Diva, Nelson Rivas, Kwesi Abbensetts, Paul Deo, Robert Trujillo, Suncadm Bey, Ibrahim, and Yang-Chi.

About Coup d’etat Arts Collective: Coup d’etat Arts Collective is a Brooklyn-based collaboration of highly respected artists who produce various art-related events throughout New York City. The Collective's annual exhibition features a never-before-seen assembly of New York City’s most sought after visual artists. With music as the backdrop, the Coup d’etat Arts Collective provides a unique platform for creative synergy while filling an undeniable void in the arts community. For additional information on Coup d’etat Brooklyn please visit www.cdtbk.com

For nearly four decades, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation has served as a fertile ground for emerging and established artists throughout Central Brooklyn. Through its Center for Arts and Culture, Restoration continues to present, promote, and preserve the artistic legacy of artists from the African Diaspora.

Mamas love...YOUNITY FRESHER! Eco-Street Art Show TOMORROW 10/3 7-11pm

I'll be showing some new work at the new YOUNITY show (will give a sneak peep soon)!

YOUNITY PRESENTS: FRESHER! AN ECO-ART EXHIBITION
- Third Annual Exhibit Features 40 Female Avant-Garde Artists Who Recycle & Create Art for the Earth -

Queens, NY (September 3, 2009)— Back for its third annual show, YOUNITY presents an eco-art exhibition entitled
FRESHER!, opening October 3, 2009 at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Educational Center in the Lower East Side section of New York City. Running until October 23, 2009, the exhibit is not the average “white-wall” art show; the all-female collective will transform the art space into an eco-funhouse of raw materials and street art. Elements such as graffiti, photography, design and construction are used to connect ideas about consumerism, environmentalism, health, and renewable energy. The private press hour from 6pm-7pm will grant access to notable, oft-unseen artists right before the public unveiling of work at 8pm. FRESHER! features main-stay YOUNITY artists such as Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, and AIKO while introducing emerging artists such as China Morbosa and Amanda Lopez YOUNITY Co-Founders and artists, Alice Mizrachi and TOOFLY, continue to push the collective to new levels of creativity.

Exhibiting works will mask the bi-level art space with a range of colorful hand-styles, creative graphics on natural textures such as wood and abstract riffs. Some of the artworks will focus on messages about greening and preserving the earth, including recycling, pollution and even ideas about social issues. A video montage will display the collective’s latest effort to Refresh the Streets –a collaborative effort to beautify a 60ft outdoor mural in Williamsburg Brooklyn with colorful, green-themed street art by selected members of the YOUNITY. Exhibiting artists at FRESHER! include SHIRO, Diana McClure, Kerri O’Connell, LICHIBAN, Krista Franklin, Kelly Denato, Niz, Paulina Quintana Jornet, and Cece Carpio, to name a few. Only 40 out of 300 female artists were selected to participate in this special exhibit.

“We wanted to provide a working network of opportunity for female artists,” says YOUNITY Co-founder Alice Mizrachi, “and we, as women, need a space to create art exhibitions, murals, books and a much needed archive of women’s urban contemporary art.” YOUNITY Co-founder TOOFLY adds, “Look at recent events that are affecting us and the next generation: the economy, global warming and healthcare, this is the perfect time to put on a show like FRESHER! and express our creative desire to promote green living and the improvement of our community.”

With the success of their premiere exhibit, The C R O S S O V E R, and the second annual Heart and Soul show, YOUNITY has become one of the most sought after all-female collectives to date. With that, they are devoted to passing the torch on to younger female artists through the YOUNITY Youth team. As of now, YOUNITY is in need of continued support to foster its self-publishing endeavors and independent growth. Limited edition YOUNITY t-shirts will be available for sale on opening night and online at www.theyounity.com. We will also have a very limited amount of Heart and Soul books available as well. The limited edition shirts and books will both retail for $20. Any other donations to the collective can be directed to: contribute@theyounity.com via PayPal.
